Three-Year Bachelor of Education: An Introduction

 



Introduction

Three-Year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) is a professional as well as academic programme designed for preparing competent teachers for secondary schools in such specialization areas as  Nepali Education, English Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, Health and Physical Education, Population Education, History Education, Geography Education, Economics Education, Political Science Education, Home Science Education, Business Education, Industrial Education, Education, and Information & Communication Technology Education. It focuses on the contents of each specialization area as well as the pedagogical skills that are essential to be competent teachers for schools. Therefore, B.Ed. curricula consist of professional courses dealing with pedagogical knowledge and skills, and specialization courses dealing with the contents of different subjects. These courses have been designed in line with the Secondary Education Curriculum of Nepal. B.Ed. graduates are eligible to apply for teacher's license in Nepal.
FoE had introduced Three-year B.Ed. Programme in 1996 with the new curriculum having single subject specialization along with elective and interdisciplinary courses. The curriculum was revised and made effective from 2008. The aims and objectives, structure, and contents of the revised courses, and eligibility criteria for the admission are presented here.

Aims and objectives
Three-year B.Ed. programme aims to develop competent school teachers and educational professionals.
The major objectives of the programme are as follows:
·       To prepare professionally sound teachers required for the secondary schools of Nepal.
·       To develop professionally trained and qualified human resources in the field of educational policy, planning, management and supervision.
·       To develop positive attitudes towards teaching.

Terminal Objectives
More specifically, upon completion of the three-year B.Ed. programme, the graduate is expected to be able:
§  To describe and explain the nature and concept of education and its philosophical, sociological, psychological, historical and scientific bases,
§  To explain the modern trends and issues related to curriculum development and the mechanism for its dissemination,
§  To develop and demonstrate strong communication skills,
§  To demonstrate knowledge and skills of classroom management practices,
§  To develop and use suitable evaluation techniques for the assessment of pupil's progress,
§  To identify and use the appropriate learning process of the students in teaching,
§  To plan lessons and teach the students using suitable methods and techniques in the classroom,
§  To prepare and use teaching aids (instructional materials) from locally available materials,
§  To perform responsibilities competently as teacher, supervisor or educational administrator,
§  To acquire an in-depth knowledge of the subject-matter needed for teaching his/her specialized area,
§  To demonstrate a positive attitude towards his/her professional growth and for further learning and
§  To identify the learning problems of weaker students and help them with various remedial measures overcome their difficulties.

Entry Requirement
Students with Higher Secondary Education Examination Pass Certificate (HSEEPC, hereafter only HSE) or Proficiency Certificate Level of Tribhuvan University (PCL) or equivalent to HSE/grade 12 pass are eligible for the admission in B.Ed programme. In addition, they need other requirements for the admission in different specialization areas which are as follows:

1.     Nepali Education
·       HSE / Grade 12 pass or PCL with Nepali major with at least 200 marks
2.     English Education
·       HSE / Grade 12 pass or PCL with English or Linguistics major
·       HSE / Grade 12 pass or PCL with 50% marks in General English  
Or
·       Candidates with HSE / Grade 12 pass or PCL must secure 50% marks in the Entrance Examination conducted by the respective department of the campuses
3.     Mathematics Education
·       HSE / Grade 12 pass or PCL with Mathematics Major containing at least 200 marks
4.     Science Education
·       HSE / Grade 12 pass or PCL with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects with at least 100 full marks in each subject
5.     Health and Physical Education
·       HSE / Grade 12 pass or PCL with Health & Physical Education
or
·       HSE / Grade 12 pass or PCL with Science or Population or Home Science or Nursing and any other subjects.
·       HSE / Grade 12 pass or PCL without health and physical education background must pass the physical fitness related entrance test conducted by the respective department of the campuses.
v The candidate without physical disability will be eligible to study health and physical education.
6.     Population Education
·       HSE / Grade 12 pass or PCL with Population Studies or Geography or Economics or Health and Physical Education or Community Health or Science or Mathematics or Home Science or Civics or Social Service or Nursing or Commerce.
7.     Geography Education, Economics Education, Political Science Education and History Education, ICT Education, Business Education, Home Science Education, Industrial Education and Education
·       HSE / grade 12 passed or PCL or its equivalent from any Faculty
Course Structure
Each student must pass 15 courses to earn Three-Year B.Ed. Five courses are offered in each year. These courses are divided into four major groups ˗ group 'A' with Communication Skills; group 'B' with Educational Foundations; group 'C' with Specialization Courses and group 'D' with Elective Courses. The details of course structure is given in Table 1.

Of the 15 courses, two courses on communication skills are offered in the first year as compulsory subjects. In Group 'B',  four papers on Foundation (core) courses including Teaching Practice are offered in the first, the second and the third year. These courses are compulsory for all students irrespective of what subject they take as specialization. In Group 'C' six papers on subject areas including Method of Teaching are offered as specialization areas. There are several specialization subject areas which students select according to their interest and their study background. Out of three papers in Group 'D', two papers are offered as elective subjects as prescribed by the concerned Subject Committee and one paper is interdisciplinary in nature and students are free to choose one interdisciplinary paper they like. Duration of the Courses and Instructional Hours
§  Three academic years
§  Effective teaching days in one academic year will be 150 (excluding days for examination and admission)
§  One course of 100 marks will be taught for 6 periods a week
§  Teaching hours per week will be 36 (6 periods x 6 days)
§  Seventy percent attendance in each of the course is compulsory.

Teaching/Learning Activities
The courses are designed in such a way that students are not just lectured at but are required to do group work, project work, case studies, survey, paper presentation, seminars, etc. More importantly, each student must complete teaching practice in the third year of the B.Ed. programme. In this course, each student is placed in a secondary school to carry out activities as mentioned in the course after completing on-campus micro- teaching activities. It is an opportunity to practice what they have learned on the campus during their course works.
Grading system
In order to earn Bachelor's degree, a student must pass the required courses of this level. Grading system is as follows:

First Division                   60% marks and above
Distinction                                    80% marks and above
